Virat Kohli notched up his 31st hundred during the opening match against New Zealand in Mumbai on Sunday. With this century Kohli has now surpassed legendary Australian Ricky Pointing to become the second highest century maker in ODIs.

Kohli, who had a quiet series against Australia by his lofty standards, got to a double milestone by scoring a hundred on his 200th ODI, a feat only achieved by Ab de Villiers of South Africa.

Kohli is now only behind Sachin Tendulkar, who amassed 49 ODI hundreds besides a staggering 51 centuries in Tests. The Indian captain has 17 hundreds to his name in the five-day format.

By reaching the three-figure mark, he also became only the third Indian to score an ODI hundred at Wankhede after Tendulkar (1996 against South Africa) and Mohammad Azharuddin (1987 against Sri Lanka).

It was not among Kohli's most fluent knocks as Wankhede pitch was on the slower side and the sapping humidity made batting tricky.

Kohli mixed caution with aggression hitting 121 off 125 balls - he hit nine boundaries and two sixes - including a majestic bowler's back drive to reach his fifty.

Coming to bat in the fourth over, Kohli was finally dismissed in the 50th over after he had successfully steered his team to safety after they were reduced to 71 for 3 in just shade above 15 overs.

With India losing both the openers early, Kohli showed a different approach, by taking considerable time to settle, initially dealing in ones and twos, and then taking the Kiwi bowlers to task.

After a cautious start, Kohli hit a cover drive in the 11th over and followed it up with two consecutive boundaries in the 15th over off Colin De Grandhomme. The skipper, was lucky to get a reprieve on 29, after Mitchell Santner dropped a straight forward chance at cover off De Grandhomme.

There was no looking back for the Indian skipper after that as he punished pacer Adam Milne, hittig him for a six over long leg.
