A heel injury during ODIs not only denied Jhulan Goswami’s participation in the following T20s in South Africa but also in the home ODI series against Australia in Baroda last week. A hurried return to the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru for treatment and rehabilitation also cut short her celebration to mark her becoming the first and only player to take 200 wickets in women’s ODIs.

Now back in the Indian set-up for the T20 tri-series against England and Australia, the 35-year-old Jhulan preferred to look ahead and return to action and help India win rather than reflect on her 200-wicket milestone achieved in Kimberley, SA.

Asked if she was able to look back on her landmark achievement, the tall right-arm pacer from Kolkata said here on Tuesday: “As a bowler, as a sportsperson, you get injured. I have learnt a lot of things this time. I gave myself time. I was disappointed not being part of the T20Is leg in SA. But these kinds of things happen and you cannot control.”

Asked how fit she is now, Jhulan said: “It was a tough time for me returning from South Africa early. The NCA support staff worked on me to make me fit for the upcoming T20 series. I had very less time to prepare. Unfortunately, the Bengaluru weather over the last two days were difficult. I had a good session on Tuesday (at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai). I am very confident, looking forward to playing good cricket and giving my best whenever I enter the field.”

Jhulan last played a T20 for India in December 2016 in India’s successful campaign in the Asia Cup in Bangkok. In fact, Indian women did not play a single T20I last year and Jhulan missed the 5-match T20 series in South Africa due to injury. That said, it is her experience that India will bank on.

Free entry for public

The Board of Control for Cricket in India will throw open the gates free for the public for the women’s T20 tri-series to be played at Brabourne Stadium from March 22 to 31, BCCI general manager Ratnakar Shetty said on Tuesday. “This is to encourage the fans to support Indian women’s cricket as they begin their preparations for this year’s World T20 in the West Indies,” he said.

Match days: March 22, 23, 25, 26, 28, 29 and 31 (final)
