Steve Smith issues personal apology to mother of heartbroken 9-year-old fan, 'sorry I made him upset'

Journalist Deborah Knight had disclosed how her nine-year-old Darcy had been upset over the ball tampering.

Former Australian cricket captain Steve Smith has issued a personal apology to Deborah Knight and her son after the journalist revealed that she was forced to console her son over the cheating scandal.

Deborah had disclosed how her nine-year-old Darcy had been upset over the ball tampering.

Steve Smith contacted her via Twitter with the message, "Could you please apologise personally to your son from me. Sorry that I made him upset also."  

Deborah replied, "Thanks you so much for making contact Steve. My son wants you to know he admires you even more than he did."

The Australia journalist, television presenter and news presenter shared the exchange on Twitter. 

She tweeted, "Surprised and humbled that @stevesmith49 has taken time to contact my son directly to personally apologise for making him so upset. He’s told Darcy that he’s glad he his support."

On Thursday, Knight had revealed that her son Darcy had been distraught to see his hero Steve break down in tears. 

'‪Just spent 20 minutes consoling my crying 9 year old who is a major Steve Smith fan after he watched the press conference,' Deborah wrote on Instagram. 

Deborah called on young cricket fans to show their support for Steve by getting in touch with the embattled sports star, explaining she would be asking Darcy to do the same.

"It would be a powerful thing for the kids of Australia who love cricket to let Steve Smith and Cameron Bancroft know that they are thinking of them."

Knight wrote in an article how she explained the scandal and Smith's punishment to her son, along with the life lessons she hopes he will take from it.

"I want my son to know that you can’t cheat. You can’t try to get away with doing the wrong thing. And if you do break the rules you have to face and accept your punishment. But I also want my son to show forgiveness and compassion and to give people the opportunity to learn from their mistakes and move on," she wrote.

Steve Smith and David Warner were slapped with 12 month bans from the sport for their role in cheating against South Africam while Cameron Bancroft was banned for 9 months.
