Wisden's Indian Cricketer of the Century, former India captain Kapil Dev, was appointed the First Chancellor of Haryana's Sports University on Saturday. Haryana sports minister Anil Vij announced the honour on his social media account. The town of Rai in Sonepat district will have the honour of hosting what is only the third sports university in India after Swarnim Gujarat Sports University in Gandhinagar and Tamil Nadu Physical Education and Sports University in Chennai.

On July 16, the Haryana Assembly passed the Sports University of Haryana Bill, 2019 to establish and incorporate a full-fledged sports university in the state. Once functional, it will promote sports sciences, sports technology, sports management and sports coaching, besides functioning as the training centre for select disciplines with the best international practices.

Though all formalities have been completed by the state, the final nod for the university is pending with the President of India. "I have personally spoken to Kapil Dev and he has given his consent," Vij said.

Envisioned as the first educational institution of its kind, the university will also conduct academic and training programmes in sports-centric affiliated areas such as medicine, infrastructure engineering, psychology, nutrition, journalism and marketing.

The 'Haryana Hurricane' made his Ranji Trophy debut against Punjab in November 1975 when he was just 16 years old. It was his six-wicket haul (6/39) in his very first first-class game that grounded the formidable Punjab side for a paltry score of 63, thus setting up a convincing victory for Haryana finishing the match figures of a total of eight wickets (2/78 in the second innings). Under his captaincy, the underdogs India went on to lift the 1983 World Cup, beating an invisible West Indies team.

His knock of 175 against Zimbabwe in the same World Cup still ranks amongst the best. Since that epic knock was not captured by any live camera then, as broadcasting channels were on a strike that day, cricket fans are anxiously waiting for the Ranveer Singh-starrer biography on Dev to see that moment recreated. The film will be released early in 2020.
