India vs Australia 3rd Test: With two boundaries lofted down the ground against Nathan Lyon, debutant Mayank Agarwal moved to his fifty on opening day of the Boxing Day Test match at the MCG. As he reached 52* in his innings, Mayank Agarwal broke a 71-year-old record- it is the highest score by any Indian on debut in Australia.

Agarwal became only the second Indian to make a 50+ on Test debut on Australian soil after Dattu Phadkar (51) at SCG in December 1947.

Agarwal's 76 is now also the second highest score on debut for an Indian player overseas.

During his knock of eight fours and a six Agarwal left behind Sunil Gavaskar’s debut innings score of 67, against West Indies in 1971, but fell one run short of Sudhir Naik’s tally of 77 runs on Test debut on England in 1974.

With his maiden fifty, Agarwal become the sixth India opener to reach 50 in his first innings of Test cricket.

Dilawar Hussain (59) versus England in Kolkata in 1934, KC Ibrahim (85) versus West Indies in Delhi in 1948, Gavaskar (65) against West Indies at Port of Spain in 1971, Arun Lal (63) versus Sri Lanka in Chennai in 1982, Shikhar Dhawan (187) versus Australia in Mohali in 2013 and Prithvi Shaw (134) versus West Indies in Rajkot in October this year have done it before him.

Mayank Agarwal also joined Sunil Gavaskar to become the fifth opener to hit a fifty in his first Test away from home. The others on the list are SS Naik, Vinoo Mankad and Lalchand Rajput.

This is only the second time an Indian opener has made his Test debut in Australia. Amir Elahi made his opening debut in the 2nd innings at Sydney in December 1947. Incidentally, Elahi had gone in at No 10 in the first innings.
