Inside 11 overs, India lost their top three batsmen on the opening day of the first Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

Josh Hazlewood struck in his very first over of the day as he dismissed Indian opener KL Rahul on the final ball of the second over of the day.

It was a poor shot from Rahul who tried to drive a ball that was going outside off. Instead, he got an inside edge that flew straight to Aaron Finch at the slip cordon. Five overs later, Murali Vijay became Mitchell Starc's first victim of the day.

Just like Rahul, Vijay tried to drive too but only managed an outside edge that flew into the gloves of Tim Paine behind the wickets.

However, the highlight dismissal was of the Indian skipper who fell to excellent bowling of Pat Cummins and some terrific work on the field from Usman Khawaja.

Kohli, who also tried to drive the ball, struck it with hard hands but little did he know he would be walking back to the pavilion after that. Australia's No.3, Khawaja, at the gully took a blinder to dismiss the Indian captain for a mere three runs.

Kohli's edge flew to the left of Khawaja. The ball clearly passed the Australian, who then  It flew to his left and came up with a one-handed screamer.

Cummins now has dismissed Kohli twice in four balls in Test cricket and this is some achievement for the Australian, considering Kohli's recent form with the willow.

Earlier in the day, Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first in the series-opening Test against Australia at Adelaide Oval on Thursday.

Paine's Australia face a scorching day in the field with temperatures to soar to 39 degrees Celsius.

Specialist batsman Rohit Sharma has been named in India's 11, beating out all-rounder Hanuma Vihari.

Australia named their 11 on Wednesday, handing a debut to opener Marcus Harris and dropping vice-captain and all-rounder Mitchell Marsh in favour of specialist batsman Peter Handscomb.

Batsman Usman Khawaja takes his place in the side despite the arrest of his brother on charges of attempting to pervert the course of justice and forgery on Tuesday.

India are bidding for their first ever test series win in Australia. Mahendra Singh Dhoni's team lost the last series Down Under 2-0 in 2014/15.
