With time fast approaching to name the next ombudsman of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the battle has once again started amongst the two most powerful factions to get their own man nominated at this important seat.

It was Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) which forwarded six names – Justices FMI Kalifulla, GS Singhvi, VS Sirpurkar, CK Thakker, DK Jain and Justice Aflab Alam – to the BCCI last month to be considered for the next ombudsman. The matter was taken up on July 26 during the BCCI’s Special General Meeting in Delhi and two names – Justice Thakkar and Justice Jain – were further short-listed after deliberations.

However, it was then decided that an opportunity must be given to state cricket associations to suggest further names before reaching a final consensus during the course of next SGM. The matter, thus, was kept in abeyance and states were asked to forward their suggestions by July 31 deadline.

Only one name was forwarded by Kerala Cricket Association and that too came after the expiry of the last date. Accordingly, the name was not included in the list of two already finalised.

Now that Supreme Court, on Wednesday, is likely to hear COA’s plea to remove all three office-bearers of BCCI, former president N Srinivasan-backed powerful section of the Board is trying to push for a former retired High Court chief justice as its candidate. DNA has reliably learnt that many state associations have received an email from Srinivasan’s close confidante in Tamil Nadu to send this particular name of retired HC chief justice to acting president CK Khanna.

“I got this email on Sunday where I have been asked to forward this name straight to acting BCCI president,” secretaries of at least two state associations from north and central told this paper on Tuesday.

The suggestion to send names to only acting BCCI president clearly signifies that all is not well between Srinivasan and Amitabh Choudhary, the acting secretary.

It is important to mention here that it was during the height of spot-fixing controversy in 2013 that Srinivasan managed to get a clean chit for himself after appointing two former judges of Madras High Court.

This is another matter that he was later removed by the Apex court on the pretext of clear conflict of interest as his position of president of BCCI and owner of the Indian Premier League team.

In the wake of this development, it has now been decided that any new name for ombudsman will only be considered after it would be endorsed by the COA. Further, this matter would also be placed in writing before the SC on Wednesday.
