While many were upset at seeing Virat Kohli get out cheaply in the first innings of the first Test against South Africa, one man from Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district took things way too far.

Captain Kohli holds the key for India's success against the Proteas, but the 29-year-old fell to the first ball bowled by Morne Morkel for merely five runs on Friday. Distraught at Kohli's dismissal, a 65-year-old man from Ratlam attempted self-immolation.

According to a report by News18, Babubal Bairva was alone in his home watching the match when the incident happened. The retired railway employee was so upset at watching his favourite cricketer get out that he reportedly poured kerosene on himself and attempted to self-immolate.

Bairva was rushed to the hospital after his family members and neighbours heard his cries. He sustained burn injuries on his head, face and hands, but his condition was stable later.

“The man in his statement accepted that he was too upset with the dismissal of Virat Kohli and set himself ablaze,” said Do Batti Police Station Assistant Sub Inspector PS Alawa.

The police also confirmed that the senior citizen was not drunk at the time of the incident. “During the probe, we found no other reason which could have driven Bairva to this extreme step,” said Alawa.

Further investigation is on at the Do Batti Police Station in Ratlam after a case was lodged.
