Mumbai-based Waaree Energies has launched easy-to-install rooftop solar kits for housing societies and colonies as well as for semi-urban and rural areas so that power in the range of 1 kilowatt (kW) to 5 kW can be generated.

The price of the solar kits is in the range of Rs 60,000 to Rs 3 lakh, depending upon the kW needed, distribution box opted for and cabling length.

“The biggest problem in having rooftop solar is installation, wherein the ones who install the solar photovoltaic (PV) panels have to ensure that there isn’t any damage to the civil structure as it would result in leakages during monsoon. Our product helps in not puncturing the civil work,” said Sunil Rathi, director, Waaree Energies.

A dead load is kept, on which the entire panel or kit is installed. In order to generate a kW, a space of 2x3 metres is utilised. The product has been designed in such a manner that it can be installed only on buildings having flat surfaces or terraces.

“As it is an easy-to-install product, it takes around 15 to 30 minutes to set it up as against around three days for conventional rooftop solar panels. If there a party or a function on a building’s terrace, it can be dismantled within 10-15 minutes and re-installed in the same amount of time. The only time-consuming aspect is wiring depending on an individual customer’s need,” added Rathi.

The solar panels provided have a shelf life of 25 years, while the inverter has a life of above 10 years, thereby making it financially feasible for those making this capital expenditure.

In the upcoming fiscal, Waaree Energies is expecting to install anywhere around 15,000 of such kits, especially at taluka and district levels. The product has also been kept on display at the company’s around 200 experience centres across the country.

“With Ujwal Discom Assurance Yojana (UDAY scheme) being implemented by the government, in the years to come, there will be power tariff hikes. Everyone looks to reduce their electricity bill amount and this is the best way one can by having rooftop solar,” Rathi told DNA Money.
