The Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji airport in Mumbai broke its own record on January 20. The airport dealth with 980 take offs and landing in total in a time span of 24 days.

The Mumbai airport had set a world record, for handling 980 flights on single-runway operations. In other words, the airport handled one flight per minute.

With this, the Chhatrapati Shivaji airport broke its own previous record to handled 974 flights in 24 hours, which was created on December 6, last year.

Mumbai airport has been known for being one of the busiest airports in the world. But Hartsfield-Jackson ranks the list since 1998. It handles around 2,500 flights and 275,000 passengers a day.

But unlike Mumbai's airport, that handles flight 24*7, Gatwick handles most of its flights between 5 a.m. and midnight because of a night curfew in force since 1971.

The work on the new airport coming up at Navi Mumbai would be completed by the end of 2019, City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) Managing Director Bhushan Gagrani today said. CIDCO is the Special Planning Authority for the airport project.

Gagrani termed the Sewri-Nhava Sheva Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL)as an important project as it would reduce travel time between south Mumbai and Navi Mumbai to just about 25 minutes.

Work on the Belapur-Taloja metro line would also be completed by the end of this year, Gagrani informed.

Incidentally, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Jayant Sinha, while talking at the annual CAPA (Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation) summit through a video link on January 31, had said that the Navi Mumbai airport could take four to five years to be operational.

Currently, Mumbai Airport faces delays until February 17 between 10 am and 5 pm for maintenance work on the main runway.

During this period, the secondary runway will be used for take-off and landings. However, the capacity of the secondary runway is far less when compared to the primary runway due to which several flights will be delayed.
