IRCTC food menu just got better: Check out what's new and how Railways is planning new deals

The Indian Railways is constantly working to give its passengers an expierence to remember and due to which lately it's focussed has been shifted to provide travellers with good and hygenic food options. Keeping that in mind, IRCTC or Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation, the e-ticketing arm of Indian Railways has recently rolled out in the form of an IRCTC (Indian Railway Catering And Tourism Corporation) app that offers you option to order foods from outside branded outlets like KFC, Haldiram, among others.

The railways for a trial basis has also initiated an innovative excercise by installing food vending machines in Coimbatore-Bengaluru Uday Express and delivering Alphonso mangoes to passengers are the latest editions.

The new menu will also be easy on your pocket. Customers can have filter coffee at Rs 7 at railway stations and on trains. 


For a plate of seven pooris with dry potato and pickles, you have to shell out just Rs 15. A full meal also can be available at Rs 50 or below. Standard thali meals (non vegetarian only in ref rooms) are available for Rs 40. Standard thali meals (vegetarian) are available for Rs 35 at all stations and on trains.  You can have tea at just Rs 5 on stations and trains. Tea with tea bags is priced at Rs 7, while tea in pots is available at Rs 10.

Earlier, it was also reported that the IRCTC has joined hands with delivery service partners TRAPIGO and Shree Mahalakshmi Swayam Sahayata Bachat Ghat (Ratnagiri) to provide the choice of regional or local cuisines to passengers on trains, a Railways said. 

TRAPIGO, a startup by IIT-IIM and NIFT graduates, is a last mile 'B2B' logistics service provider for food products.

"To ensure reliable delivery of hot and fresh food from the choicest restaurants in the city, TRAPIGO - with its own fleet of delivery boys in co-branded uniforms - will guarantee the execution. Orders placed on IRCTC's e-catering website www.ecatering.irctc.co.in or Food-on-track' app will be delivered by TRAPIGO in neat packaging with co-branded tapes, stickers etc. at a nominal fee of Rs. 15," the statement read.

Not just food, passengers travelling in air-conditioned coaches of trains can now wrap themselves up in soft and clean blankets of superior quality, according to revised specifications issued by the Railway Board.

The instructions issued earlier this month has said that the blankets which are provided to passengers in AC coaches should be clean and free of grease, soap, filling or any other admixture which would give fictitious mass or firmness to the blankets.
