Asia's one of the largest automobile event has been in its full swing in Greater Noida in India. The 14th edition of Auto Expo 2018, has been the biggest than ever.
Expanded on a much larger scale than 2016, Auto Expo 2018 would witness launch of 24 veicles and unveiling of around 100 automobiles.
The Auto Expo 2018 grabbed eyeballs as it showcased many concept driven cars, with the majestic Mercedes-Benz Concept EQ and Honda Sports EV stealing maximum eyeballs.
Electric mobility seems to be the flavour of this year's auto expo with companies including Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra and Mahindra, Tata Motors, Toyota, Hyundai, BMW and Mercedes Benz lining up showcases and launches as the country gear towards shift towards eco-friendly vehicles.
The move is also in line with the government's mission of having only electric vehicles being sold by 2030.
Below we have listed out the major electronic cars that unveiled during Auto Expo 2018
1. Hyundai: Ioniq, Kona prototype
Hyundai was one of the major attention at the Auto Expo 2018. With an impressive line up of cars and brand ambassador like Shah Rukh Khan, the compnay was among the favourites.
Hyundai displayed its two flagship cars, one of them was is electronic car Hyundai Ioniq. Ioniq's will be available in all formats of powertrains - combustion engine-only, hybrid and electric.
Hyundai also expressed a need for National EV policy, which will address the issue of affordability of such vehicles.
2. Maruti Suzuki e-Survivor concept
Maruti Suzuki’s e-Survivor concept: The vehicle will be launched in India in 2020 as the company’s first electric vehicle. It also showcased the working model of a hybrid vehicle.
3. Honda: Sports EV, NeuV concepts
Unveiling Honda Sports EV Concept and Honda NeuV, a concept, Honda said it will wait for a clarity in policy for EVs before firming up its plans in India.
Honda Cars India president and CEO Yoichiro Ueno said, "We are requesting that there should be a roadmap for battery charging station, which EV society in India trying to achieve. Otherwise, it is too difficult to decide what products to bring to India. We are developing a variety of EVs."
But, considering the size of India, it will take time to establish charging stations. So, the country could look at a combination of hybrid and EVs. India is also a price sensitive market, and EVscurrently cost at least twice the comparable model with ICE (internal combusion engine), he said.
4. Tata Motors: Tigor, Tiago, TaMo RaceMo EVs
Tata Motors too has displayed two of its EVs, the all-electric versions of the Tiago and the Tigor at the 2018 Auto Expo. Both the EVs are powered by a 3-phase AC induction motor which produces a peak power output of 30kW at 4,500 RPM
5. Mahindra: e-KUV100 NXT, e2O NXT, Udo and Atom EV concepts
Pawan Goenka, MD, Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) which pioneered EV cars in India when it acquired Bengaluru-based Reva in 2010 launched a number of of EV concept vehicles.
The company also launched a cloud based platform for EV, which it claims will accelerate the turnaround time for creating new vehicle.
"Issues related to clarity on policies and infrastructure remain but I am sure it can be sorted out in due time" Goenka said. M&M's push for EVs comes on the backdrop of government's push on the segment in a big way as it expects around 5 million of it to be sold by around next 15 years.
