In a partial relief to the Chidambarams, a Delhi Court on Tuesday extended protection from arrest in Aircel-Maxis case till August.

The Patiala House Court was hearing the anticipatory bail plea of former finance minister P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram in connection with the money laundering case.

The former Union finance minister was given protection from arrest by the Enforcement Directorate till July 10 by the Court.

Earlier, Chidambaram had appeared before the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in the case.

The Aircel-Maxis deal case, which emerged out of 2G spectrum cases, pertains to a grant by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) to firm M/S Global Communication Holding Services Ltd for investment in Aircel.

The ED had earlier said that the FIPB approval granted in 2006 by Chidambaram was beyond his mandate as he was only authorised to accord approval on project proposals up to Rs 600 crore.

P Chidambaram's son Karti was arrested on February 28 at the Chennai airport upon his return from the United Kingdom, for his alleged role in the case. Currently, Karti is on bail too.

Earlier in May, Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman launched a blazing attack against senior Congress leader and said that the ongoing black money probe was the ‘Nawaz Sharif moment’ for the Opposition party.

She had accused the Congress of not taking any action against former finance minister for allegedly failing to disclose foreign assets.

Addressing the media, Sitharaman said that the Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who himself is out on bail on a financial matter, should certainly comment and tell people of India if he is going to investigate on Chidambaram's not having disclosed income held abroad.

Calling it the "Nawaz Sharif moment" of the Congress Party, Sitharaman said that the alleged financial discrepancies can't be overlooked by the party.

Sitharaman further alleged Chidambaram of violating black money law, which was brought by Prime Minister Narendra Modi government as part of its drive against black money and to prosecute those Indians who have secretly stashed illicit wealth abroad.
