Over the last one decade, Bollywood has seen several films being turned into franchises. With the first film working well and bringing in the audiences, the producers, directors, as well as actors try to cash in on the film’s market value by making several sequels. Many times, although the banners backing the franchise remains the same, different directors are roped in to helm the subsequent parts in the series. Here’s taking a look at a few franchise films that changed hands.

HOUSEFULL

Sajid Khan was the man behind Housefull and Housefull 2. Both the films did  exceedingly well at the box office. But, after a fallout with producer friend Sajid Nadiadwala, Sajid-Farhad were roped in to helm the third part. Now, there are  reports that Nadiadwala and Khan are teaming up one more time for the fourth instalment in the comedy series.

Ek Tha TIGER

Kabir Khan, who directed Ek Tha Tiger, has never been interested in directing sequels and making his films into franchises. So, when YRF wanted to make a sequel to the blockbuster Salman Khan-Katrina Kaif film, he bowed out. His protege, Ali Abbas Zafar, was roped in to helm Tiger Zinda Hai, its sequel. The film releases this Christmas.

DHOOM

One of the first action franchises that had a super run at the box office, Dhoom and Dhoom 2 had Sanjay Gadhvi calling the shots, but for the third part, YRF roped in Vijay Krishna Acharya to direct Aamir Khan. Now, according to sources, the banner is planning the fourth instalment in the series, with Shah Rukh Khan playing the villain and Maneesh Sharma writing and directing it.

DABANGG

Salman’s Dabangg broke all records. Abhinav Kashyap, who directed the first part, had a fallout with the superstar and the film’s producer Arbaaz Khan, who took over the reins of the sequel. However, the third part, which goes on the floors sometime next year, will be directed by Prabhu Dheva.

BAAGHI

Baaghi, directed by Sabbir Khan and starring Tiger Shroff and Shraddha Kapoor, did over Rs 80 crore at the box office. But when producer Sajid Nadiawala decided to make a sequel of the superhit film, he roped in  Ahmed Khan as the director. Apparently, a tiff between Sajid Nadiadwala and Sabbir caused this.

FORCE

In Nishikant Kamat’s Force, John Abraham played the no-nonsense cop. With Nishi being unavailable during Force 2, Abhinay Deo took charge. The film couldn’t live upto its expectations, despite having a bigger star cast. There were also plans of making Force 3 soon but wonder what happened to that!

ROCK ON

Abhishek Kapoor’s debut directorial venture Rock On!! was the surprise hit of 2008. Eight years later, when the makers decided to revisit the space, a new director — Shujaat Saudagar — stepped in. The film was one of the biggest disasters last year. Guess there won’t be a part three in the series...

BHOOTHNATH

While Vivek Sharma directed the first part, for the second, which released after a gap of six years, Nitesh Tiwari came on board. Both films worked!

RACE

The franchise is synonymous with the director duo Abbas-Mustan but now, after two successful parts in the series, producer Ramesh Taurani has decided to change his director. He has got Remo D’Souza on board to helm the project, which will star Salman, Jacqueline Fernandez, Bobby Deol and Daisy Shah in lead roles. The film goes on floors in November.
