The makers of 'Sanju' released a new video today that shows the audience what all went behind transforming a lean Ranbir Kapoor into the very bulky Sanjay DuttRajkumar Hirani opens the video saying, "The day we decided we have to do Sanjay Dutt's biopic, the biggest challenge was who will play Sanjay Dutt? Somebody had to not only look like him but also feel and behave like him. [sic]"

"Ranbir had lot of apprehensions as to how will he look like Sanjay Dutt. He knew Sanjay Dutt is bigger in size, his style is different. He was really worried how will he not just physically look like him but also feel like him," he adds.

Ranbir Kapoor has asserted this in almost all the interviews that he was not initially convinced about playing a living legend on silver screen. A lot of persuasion went into getting Ranbir to play Sanjay, who also happens to be his childhood icon. But, the work didn't end there. Once they got him on board, they realised that if they cannot make him look like Sanju, they cannot really move ahead with the film.

"I am not him. I can never be him. There is only one Sanjay Dutt and nobody can emulate him. So, I had my fears. So we were very clear that if we cannot achieve his look, we will not make the film," Ranbir tells in the video.

"Sanjay Dutt's face has changed over the years. Because of alcohol,  his face had gotten puffy and his chin had kind of come down. So I think that added to his aging process. Tests after tests we kept failing and it's really hard because you have to sit on a chair for six hours, hoping like 'God make this work'. And it's just in a span of 30 seconds that you see, 'it's not working' and you realize that six hours of work has gone down in drain," he further adds.

One of the most important parts of the transformation was obviously building a muscular body. While most of Bollywood swears by gymming, Ranbir absolutely hates it. But he made an exception for Sanju.

Speaking about his experience in the gym, Ranbir says, "To be honest, I detest the gym. I can't stand it. It's an occupational hazard so I have to go. I have done some 13-14 films and this was the first time when I was getting an opportunity to do something with my body. So, I took it up as a challenge. It requires a lot of discipline and sacrifice.I was having 8 meals a day, waking up at 3 in the morning to drink a protein shake. Something that I didn't imagine I could do. Sanjay Dutt represents the epitome of body building and I could not screw that up. I knew, if I was going to play Sanjay Dutt on screen, body was essential. I had a certain muscular look that I have never had in my entire life. Everybody on set used to look at me like 'okay, we have achieved something'."

One would think that the hardest look to pull off would have been that from his 'Saajan' phase when Sanjay used to sport long hair and had just got into body-building. But, Ranbir reveals in the video, "The hardest look was the coming-out-of-jail-Sanjay-Dutt. You know, the iconic shot. And, because it was so iconic and so fresh in people's minds; we knew we had to get that right."

Sanju might have been getting mixed responses from audience but one thing that everybody agrees to is that Ranbir Kapoor was beyond phenomenal in the biopic. And, this video further strengthens the argument that no one could have played Sanjay Dutt's part better than Ranbir.
