Nandita Das made her directorial debut with 'Firaaq' featuring Nawazuddin Siddique in the lead, ten year later the talented duo has reunited once again for the biopic of the legendary short story writer Saadat Hasan Manto.

Right ahead of the world premiere of 'Manto' at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival 2018 in Un Certain Regard, makers dropped the teaser of the film giving a glimpse into Manto's world. Nawzuddin Siddique slips perfectly into the character from pre-independent India. The teaser highlights how Manto struggles to share his unapolgetic take on what's happenening around him through his stories. The film follows the most tumultuous four years in the life of Manto during the time of Partition of India and Pakistan. The teaser gives a glimpse into how his writing had no takers as he struggles to have a normal family life while being lost in the world of story-telling. His increasing alcoholism leads into downward spiral. Mantos' pathos in expressing his thoughts fearlessly has been shown beautifully by the director as Nawazuddin packs hard-hitting one liners in the teaser like 'aakhir mein afsaane he reh jaate hain aur unke kirdaar'  whichsums up his life story.

The film also stars Rasika Dugal as his wife Safia and Tahir Raj Bhasin in the role of his friend Shyam.

Earlier in an interview to PTI, Nawazuddin Siddique had said, "I think only that person can do 'Manto' (film), who has the courage to speak the truth. You may know every acting technique, but you can't play Manto if you are not a true and honest person - be it with your work or in life." He also explained how he could relate to the character  and siad, " I am hopeful people will relate to him, especially those who believe in speaking truth, no matter how difficult it maybe."
