Kartik Aaryan is on cloud nine since his recent release Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety has left many films behind and has almost made its place into the 100 crore club. The guy who has won millions of hearts yet again, this time as Sonu, arrived in the Pink City on Sunday for an event. While he was on his way to Jaipur by road all the way from Delhi, he spoke to Afterhrs at length. Excerpts:
Your film has almost made it to the 100 crore club, how does it feel?
I feel ecstatic, extremely happy and surreal. And I am looking forward to doing more such films. It is a great feeling, out of all the things, that I wanted to do, one thing has been ticked off!

Who would be the first person you would call once the film finally enters the 100 crore club?
I have shared all my joys, and everything with my mom. So she would be the first person that I call.
How different experience it was for you as Sonu, from the Pyaar Ka Punchnama films?
Playing Sonu was completely different. I have never played a character like this. It had some grey shade, but still, it was appreciated; doing this, was the trickiest part of Sonu. I had to cross those hurdles, because somewhere you would feel ye galat hai... Yet, people started rooting for Sonu. Because, at the end of the day, this film was more about friendship.
How much did you relate with Sonu?
Whatever character I play, I start behaving like that in real life. I became extra decisive in real life. I could relate with Sonu a little. I think sab mein Sonu hota hai, to an extent. Aur ab jab mere andar Sonu aa gaya hai, toh wo jaa hi nahi raha hai.
You did not have a monologue in this one, you were not romancing anyone in this film. Still, Sonu is ruling every heart...
I was romancing my character in this film. (laughs) There are very few films in which hero doesn’t have a love interest. But then I had so many shades to play, and I enjoyed doing that. Coming to monologue, this had become a pet question of every single person, “will it have one?”. We chose not to take the monologue in this one, and I am glad it worked!
What do you like about the Pink city?
I was travelling from Delhi to Jaipur by road, and it has been so much fun. We stopped at a dhaba on the highway and had food. I am a big foodie, and I love Rajasthani food. I have a crazy sweet tooth, Luv sir wanted me to have a ripped body and abs, so I had to cut down on my sugar I had so much cravings during that time. At the moment I don’t have any such restrictions, so I would love to savour it all here!
What kind of films would you want to do now?
I would love to do a character like Shah Rukh Khan in Baazigar, and say those lines. Apart from that, my primary focus would be on doing youth centric cinema.
You have worked really hard on your physique and looks...
Now that I have a box-office success, these things come added to it. Bina achha kaam kiye, looks wouldn’t matter! I worked on these for my movie only; this reinvention is an add-on to my work. I worked on my body, I am fitter now, and things are slowly getting aligned. Maine jo paudhe ko pani diya tha, it is finally bearing fruit now.
How much have things changed for you, since the day you entered the industry?
Things have changed to a great extent. When people get to know that I am in the entertainment industry, you start getting calls from even those people who you’ve never spoken to. But I don’t blame them, even I get starstruck.
But, things changed for me, in a good way. So, there was this pre Sonu era, and there will be a post Sonu era.
