It’s been a season of luscious, jewel-toned, festive-focussed clothing in Bollywood. Most actresses have taken a departure from the heavily-embellished attires in favour of sheen-rich weaves like Chanderi, Benarasi and minimal embroideries. There’s a shift towards light-weight ensembles, which don’t weigh down the wearer but facilitate a sense of ease and movement instead.

For instance, Kareena Kapoor Khan picked a yellow brocade Raw Mango lehenga that she paired with a pink dupatta for Ganpati festivities. Her bestie Malaika Arora opted for a pista green Simar Dugal suit as she partook in the celebrations at Arpita Khan Sharma’s home. At her Ganesh puja, hot mama-on-the-move Shilpa Shetty Kundra looked radiant in a Vidhi Mahajan sari, which was understated. Designer Ohaila Khan says, “Benarasi and beautiful woven fabrics have always had a strong presence in Indian festive clothing. They will continue to do so as we come from a country with the most skilled craftsmen and karigars in the world.”

PUSH TOWARDS WEARABLE DRESSING

Most of the looks seen in the past couple of weeks score high on wearability and comfort than OTT crystals and thread embroideries.

Stylist Isha Bhansali says, “Chanderi and Benarasi fabrics are quite light and emit immense shine without embroidery. Also, these fabrics are a lot more wearable.”

TEXTILE FOCUS

Festive dressing is synonymous with heirloom textiles in a rich ethnic palette and they work best for any traditional gathering. This year, actresses have gone back to authentic vibrant Indian shades such as sindoor red, rani pink, haldi yellow in luminous textiles such as brocade, Kanjeevaram silks or even the humble Chanderi. Designer Aniket Satam says, “Textiles that are so rich and vibrant do not demand heavy embellishment support. They make the look shiny and lightweight at the same time.”
