A few years ago, he played such a convincing character that he is still addressed by the same name. Quirky yet endearing, it is the character’s traits that he seems to have taken on when he speaks to you with a beaming smile. While most actors in the industry would consider it a setback, Varun Sharma aka Chucha, considers it a gift.

“I think it is a blessing to be known by the name of your character. How many characters can we count on our fingertips? Not many... To be one of them is a big achievement. Chucha (the character he played in his debut film, Fukrey) gave me that in my very first film, I think I am just lucky!” shared Varun, in the city to address a FICCI Flo session on Friday.

Speaking to AFTERhrs, the young actor opened up about the way he would want to be remembered. Asked about what would he want on his tombstone, the actor said, “I think it would be ‘I hope my journey made you smile’.”

Real-life ‘Fukrapanti’

The Fukrey actor was quizzed about his real-life fukrapanti. He shared an interesting incident. “My mom used to make delicious aloo ke parathe, and would give me two for school lunch. But I liked to eat kulchhe with a cold drink, which used to cost Rs 15. I started selling those to a friend, Rs 5 for each. But it wasn’t sufficient, so I asked my mom to give me 3 parathe,” he shared. When his mother found out, the parathas were replaced with bread and butter, putting an end to his business plans!

A childhood dream

The 5-feet-10 actor shared how his dream took shape in childhood, specifically after he watched Baazigar at 7 years of age. “Uss time main totla tha. I was singing the popular song as ‘Ye Taali Taali Aankhein... Ye Dore Dore Daal’ and that’s when I realised that I wanted to be an actor. I was mesmerised looking at Shah Rukh sir and Kajol ma’am onscreen. At home, I told my mother that I want to be an actor,” Varun said.

A full circle

He also shared how he felt about life coming full circle, as he later got to work with the Abbas Mustan (directors of Baazigar), as well as SRK and Kajol in Dilwale. He revealed about his first stage act while at school in Kasauli, where Sanjay Dutt was also an alumnus. “It was my school’s foundation day and I was sure that Sanjay Dutt would be coming, so I tried to be a part of the play that was being staged. The teacher told me there was just one character left, which was a tree,” he shared. And, that’s how Varun played a ‘ped’ as his first stage experience.

Flaunting flaws

Unlike most actors of the current generation, Varun doesn’t have six pack abs and a fit body. But he believes that one must accept their flaws. As the session revolved around ‘Flaunt your flaws,’ he opened up about his very much visible teeth gap. “I don’t want to change anything about myself. People earlier told me that I should fill my teeth gap, but Madonna saved me from doing it,” said the actor. Similarly, he added, how Chucha, his character was cute, quirky and has some adorable flaws.

Debut visit to Pink City

It was Varun’s first visit to Jaipur, while he has been to Rajasthan earlier to shoot for 'Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon' with comedian and actor Kapil Sharma. To explore the city, Varun is staying here for two days, “I have some family friends here, who are planning to take me to Hawa Mahal and a few more places. We might also go to Chokhi Dhani.” Varun added that he also loved visiting Ajmer Sharif with Kapil.
