Over 700 members of Federation of Western India Cine Employees including members from all the 24 crafts of the film industry were present on the first day of the strike outside the main gate of Film City Studio on Wednesday.

While the FWICE claim that they managed to cripple the shooting of film and television serials, the producers say that they managed to shoot despite the strike as workers were on their side. Producer JD Majethia said, “There were workers who violated the court order, which stated that they cannot create commotion, but they did the same on some set. Despite all that, producers have managed to finish their shooting on Wednesday.’’

FWICE rubbishes the producers’ claims. General secretary Dilip Pithwa says, “The producers are lying and also forcing workers to shoot at gunoint. But two more associations, including the equipment suppliers and vanity van owners. will be joining our strike. We will continue to strike work till the producers fulfill our demand of 11 per cent, which is pittance for them. If need be, we will sit on hunger strike till workers get their dues.’’

There were injuries also on the first day of the strike. President of FWICE BM Tiwari said, “Our vigilance committee member Naveen Shetty was manhandled by producers men in Film City, which has been reported to the police.’’

A senior media person who managed to sneak on to the set adds, “Television serial producers have a very tight deadline to deliver the episodes to channels, if they fail, they are fined heavily and theses days they don’t really bank episodes. If the strike continues, we may just get to see re-runs of shows on general entertainment channels soon.’’
