King of Romance: Shah Rukh Khan

Who can forget Raj aka Shah Rukh Khan flashing his dimples and saying 'Agar ye tujhse pyar karti hai toh ye zarur palat kar dekhegi' in Aditya Chopra's 'Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge'. Posing in his signature pose with arms wide open or in 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai' when Rahul says "Hum ek baar jeete hain ek baar marte hain, aur pyar woh bhi ek baar he hota hai." Shah Rukh Khan can make girls go weak in their knees and fall in love with him, like nobody else. Women love him, men envy him as he continues to be the king of romance.

Cut to 2017, SRK is 51 years old and in his quest to do a love story which suits his age and experience finds himself playing a loverboy in Imtiaz Ali's Jab Harry Met Sejal'. Remember the tag line of the film 'what you seek is seeking you'. SRK is making a comeback in a romantic film after five long year. This time on a journey of self discovery, Shah Rukh plays the role of Harvinder Singh Nehra, a tour guide in Europe who while helping Sejal find her lost engagement ring, finds himself. And Imitaz Ali, whose films are known to have too many layers to be called just a love story has discovered a different side of loverboy SRK.

Harry is quite unlike Rahul or Raj he has played so far, and Imtiaz Ali ensures that. The filmmaker who worked with Shah Rukh Khan for the first time said, "I was told that by a lot of people. I had the advantage that I knew SRK from before and know that he is not stupid guy. Why would he want to work with a director who he doesn't want to participate with. He used to say  mere laayak kuch ho toh bolna, tumhe agar lage main kar sakta hun toh bolna. It's important that you feel I suit the character, not me. If your film ever has a character of my age and suits me then offer me your film. He was very clear he doesn't want to those loverboy roles again. If he wanted to play Rahul or Raj he would have gone to the same filmmakers again."

SRK is looking his age he's not trying to play it cool and trust us fans won't be able to take eyes off him. There is no grand entry scene in JHMS, no signature pose and no close ups of his dimples too...as this time the superstar is expressing through his eyes as much as the dialogues penned by Imtiaz Ali. No cliches here, no mills and boon kind of romance, instead the film is all about Gujarati girl Sejal and Punjabi tour guide's conversations. SRK-Anushka film is on the lines of Hollywood hit, 'Before Sunrise' banking heavily on the interactions of the lead stars. You won't hear SRK or Anushka say 'I love you' and without revealing much we can say Jab Harry Met Sejal has the cutest and the most realistic proposal SRK has ever made to a girl. And being a Dilliwalah, he looks adorable venting out his frustration in Punjabi each time.

Harry is a complicated character with too many layers. He in intense yet funny, romantic but sleazy too and 'cheap' and chivalrous in the same film. In one scene, SRK's character pokes a finger into a blonde's naval(not used to seeing the ladies' man SRK behave like this) and then in the next scene he is shown protective about Sejal. But there are many moments where you will find Harry adorable. Imtiaz Ali described the character saying, " "Shah Rukh Khan's character Harinder Singh Nehra is at a juncture where he has lost hope. He has lost interest in life. There is a certain crudeness, superficially to this character. Something like Cynicism. But there is so much of him who wants to be innocent and free flowing. So these are the layers in Shah Rukh Khan's character, I hope people will like them."

His chemistry with Anushka Sharma is HOTT! They look really good together and very different from 'Suriji' and 'Dhani partner' in Rab Ne Di Jodi. Imtiaz Ali has reintroduced this jodi and added freshness to the pairing. He is a loner and she is a goofball and together make up for perfect partner in crime. SRK has even done a liplock scene for the second time in his career. And trust me, this one is more convincing than the kissing scene with Katrina Kaif in 'Jab Tak Hai Jaan'.

This is the first time Imtiaz Ali has worked with the King of romance and without being influenced by the superstar's line of work. The filmmaker explained why SRK is staying away from mush. He said, " "He hasn't done a love story for the longest time because he doesn't want to do the same things. He doesn't associate  with the same stories because of age and experience. He wants to do something layered. I wasn't conscious and finally when we started working together we forgot he is Shah Rukh Khan or what he has achieved in the past.. The only aim was to better the film or a scene."

Our take from Jab Harry Met Sejal, Shah Rukh Khan is King of Romance who looks sexy and charming wooing ladies on the big screen. And yes, there's not going to be any other King of Romance for a longtime. As the filmmaker puts it, "SRK has got the largest heart. It's not a coincidence that a certain tag gets associated. You can't quarrel with it, there must be a reason. I feel sometimes the closest people around you are not aware of the truth in your heart, while people in villages who watch you know about you.. He has got the maximum love."

So please keep spreading love Mr Khan.
