For someone whose prolific body of work transcended borders and appealed to cinegoers in India and abroad, Om Puri will forever be remembered as one of the country’s finest actors. Amongst the last few films he worked on before his untimely demise last January is Lashtam Pashtam, helmed by debutant Manav Bhalla. We hear the National Award-winning actor was so moved by the plot of the film that celebrates brotherhood and friendship beyond borders that he agreed to slash his remuneration to make the movie commercially viable.

Confirming the same, Manav says, “I wanted to make this film in the true spirit of human relationships and a bond of brotherhood against all odds, despite budgetary concerns. Since I had written the script keeping Omji in mind, I wanted him to hear it. He loved the story so much that he decided to cut his fees. I was touched by his gesture that reflected his generosity and will forever be grateful to this cinema genius, whose kindness was always a part of his persona. The film highlights the values that Omji held dear as a human being and actor — universal peace and harmony. It is aptly set to release this Independence Day weekend. I will forever cherish having worked with Omji on (probably) his last film and my first.”

Lashtam Pashtam, produced by Manav Bhalla and Gheorghe Seran, releases worldwide on August 10.
