The legal wrangle between Vashu Bhagnani and T-Series over Fanney Khan and Batti Gul Meter Chalu (BGMC) continues in the High Courts of Delhi and Mumbai. This is owing to the directives of Justice SJ Kathawalla in Bombay High Court on July 13, and its subsequent adjournment to July 19, as another suit against the producer was meant to be heard in Delhi High Court on July 17.

The producer’s lawyers reportedly argued against the ‘ex-parte’ order dated July 10, 2018, which restrained Vashu and his company Pooja Entertainment & Films Pvt Ltd from interfering in the distribution and release of Fanney Khan (starring Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Rajkummar Rao) and Batti Gul Meter Chalu (starring Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam). On July 17, Justice Pratibha Singh of Delhi HC refused to lift the stay order on Vashu from issuing notices or making any claims against Fanney Khan and interfering with the rights of T-Series in the said film.

The producer’s lawyers informed the court that a substantiative proceeding had been filed by them before the Bombay High Court to adjudicate the respective claims of the parties. Since the scope of that suit was much larger, the Delhi matter should either be dismissed as not maintainable or otherwise a clarification be issued that they can go to the Bombay High Court. However, since the matter in the Capital was prior in time, the Delhi HC reportedly refused to pass any such order or issue clarification, and instead directed Vashu to file his alleged agreements on record for consideration of rival claims of the parties next week.

Last week, the producer had told After Hrs that he had acquired the All India distribution rights of multiple films of KriArj Entertainment, one of the producers of Fanney Khan and BGMC and these two movies were also part of those deals. His legal fight with T-Series is for his rights vis-a-vis his agreements with KriArj Ent.

The hearing for Vashu’s case against T-Series and others in the Bombay High Court was underway at the time of going to press.
