Ever since Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui entered the web space last year with Sacred Games, OTT platforms seem to have become a lucrative avenue for B-Town actors. While Kalki Koechlin and Jim Sarbh were seen in Smoke, a show about Goan mafia and politics, R Madhavan and Amit Sadh impressed viewers in Breathe. Nimrat Kaur, Radhika Apte, Saqib Saleem, Pankaj Tripathi, Arunoday Singh and Vir Das among many others chose to give the web a chance. Here’s looking at who else will explore the digital platform this year...

Abhishek Bachchan

While R Madhavan made his debut in a web series with Breathe, the second season of the successful show will see AB junior foraying into the digital space. The actor has been the voice of Bagheera in Mowgli, which was released on a digital platform, but this will be the first time that he will be seen in a web series. Amit Sadh, who was also in the first season, will give him company this time as well. From what we hear, this will not be a continuation but a fresh story. Well, as long as the story and plot are as gripping as the prequel, this should be something to look forward to.

Arjun Rampal

Just last month, Arjun Rampal posted a picture of himself online with the caption, ‘So excited to announce my new project #TheFinalCall — a story that will change the way you see your own life — forever. My debut web series with @ZEE5India based on @kumarpriya’s book ‘I Will Go With You’. Stay tuned! (sic)” The Daddy actor has also said in a statement that people will get to see him in a new avatar. From what we know about the book, the story is about a flight full of passengers who have no clue that their pilot is contemplating suicide, that too, mid air! Sounds exciting!

Mrunal Thakur

Having played a number of roles on the small screen, Mrunal Thakur became a household name for TV viewers. For those who weren’t aware of her, the actress managed to get them to notice her with the international film, Love Sonia. While she awaits the release of her first mainstream film, Super 30 opposite Hrithik Roshan, she also has Baahubali: Before The Beginning, a web series to look forward to. Talking about playing Sivagami in the series, she had said in an interview, “For me, when I gave the audition, of course, it was not easy. When I saw Baahubali part 1 and 2, the benchmark was really high. To match up to Ramya, who plays Sivagami in the movies, was a challenge.”

Jackie Shroff

The suave actor created quite a stir when he acted in the short film, Khujli, which got a digital release in 2017. The short saw Jackie and Neena Gupta playing a middle-aged couple are trying to spice up their sex life. Now, the actor’s all set to make his debut in web series, Criminal Justice, the Indian adaptation of the  British series by the same name. In an interview to a leading publication, he had said, “It is mysterious, heart-pounding, unpredictable, Thrilling and keeps you hooked and on the edge of the seat waiting for answers you thought you knew.”

Huma Qureshi

In November, Huma Qureshi’s mother dropped in at the sets of Leila, to wish her daughter for starting her first web series, to be directed by filmmaker Deepa Mehta. Adapted from a novel by writer and executive producer Urmi Juvekar, the series is set in the near future and tells the story of a mother’s search for her daughter, from whom she was separated 16 years ago. Just last month, Huma’s brother, Saqib Saleem too, made his debut on web with the series Rangbaaz.

Emraan Hashmi

In July last year, it announced that Emraan Hashmi will be a part the original series Bard of Blood (BoB). Based on Bilal Siddiqui’s book The Bard Of Blood, the series is set against the backdrop of the Indian subcontinent, and will tell the story of an expelled spy, Kabir Anand who is recalled from his new life as a Shakespeare professor in Panchgani to save his country and long-lost love. The shoot for the series began in October in Leh. Emraan’s first international film, Tigers, recently released on Zee5 but BoB will mark his debut in the web series arena.

Manoj Bajpayee

If one found a number of Kashmir pictures on Manoj Bajpayee’s social media account, it’s because the actor had been shooting in the beautiful locales for The Family Man, his first web series produced and directed by Raj and DK. The story revolves around a middle-class man who works for a special cell of the National Intelligence Agency. On one hand, he has to protect the nation from terrorists, he also has to ensure that his family stays protected from the consequences of high-pressure, secretive profession. National Film Award recipient Priyamani will also be part of the show and the series will be available in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu.
