Travelling to Bangalore International Airport (BIA) is not only tiring, due to traffic jams, but dangerous as well. The Hebbal flyover stretch is the most perilous as vehicles zooming past at breakneck speed towards and from BIA escape collision in a fraction of a second.

The reason is this: The intersection, where the two roads - Bellary Road and Outer Ring Road - converge is the most dangerous, especially for those moving towards the airport, as the vehicles coming from BEL Circle towards the airport on the Outer Ring Road don't stop or slow down.

As motorists coming from Bellary Road are unable to see the traffic on the left side, there are clear chances of collisions.

They cannot move towards the left as they have to intersect vehicles on the road emerging from next to Hebbal Lake.

There are no signals/speed breakers/indicators either.

Vehicles coming to the city from BIA, too, find it difficult after the Esteem Mall signal, before approaching the three roads-one towards Kolar on the left, another towards Tumkur in the centre and the third towards the city on the right.

Most motorists manoeuvre the slope at high speed, but stop abruptly as they are not sure which road to take.

If one has to take the Kolar Road, he/she has to read the sign, which, considering the vehicle's speed, the driver is unable to.

The motorist stops while he/she figures out which road to take; this disturbs other motorists and leads to accidents, mostly involving two-wheelers.

Roop Kumar, a resident of Hebbal, who uses this road regularly, says: “There is an urgent need for humps on Bellary Road after Hebbal flyover for helping vehicles going towards BIA, and in front of Hebbal Lake to guide motorists heading towards the city.”

Hebbal traffic police admit that accidents are taking place before vehicles coming from BIA touch Hebbal flyover.

“We are helpless,” they admit.

MA Saleem, additional commissioner of police (traffic) plans to ask National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to construct humps on the Outer Ring Road to break the speed of vehicles entering BIA Road.

“A similar problem surfaced with a flyover on 14th Main in HSR Layout. I wrote to BDA to build a road hump on the Ring Road. I will act on this as well,” he says.
