It could be the final assault on DV Sadananda Gowda’s clean image by his opponents led by former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa before the state goes for elections.

BSY’s supporters, propelled by his close confidant Puttaswamy, have landed in Mangalore seeking details of every property registered in the name of Gowda and his relatives, and the businesses they conduct.

Sources in Mangalore sub-registrar’s office say that some people involved in real estate and land dealings have been collecting details about Gowda’s properties in Mangalore. However, but they have been disappointed to find that Gowda holds only one property in his name - the single-storey building with roughly 3,500 sq ft built-up area in Puttur. Half of it has been rented out too. Officials say they do not know anything about his properties in Bangalore.

According to sources loyal to Gowda, Yeddyurappa’s group is trying to frame Gowda in some cases by pressuring officials in the district, as this could be their last chance to start a slur campaign against him before the elections. Yeddyurappa wants to stage a comeback by dismantling the exisiting Vokkaliga leadership in the state, and using his close confidante Shobha Karandlaje to lead the community.

Karandlaje, on her part, has made several attempts to prove that Gowda is not a Vokkaliga. For this, she has been castigated by Vokkaliga leaders in old Mysore area including Mysore, Mandya, Chamarajanagar, Ramanagara, Bangalore rural and Bangalore urban districts. “She had carried out an anti-Gowda campaign when she was the district in-charge minister of Mysore,” said Lokaiah Gowda, a Vokkaliga leader.

“Yeddyurappa and his group are trying to gain an upper hand in the Vokkaliga community by bringing Gowda down in the eyes of senior leaders of the BJP and RSS. Vokkaliga leaders have warned BJP’s state unit not to allow a slur campaign against Gowda,” said Narayan Gowda, leader of Dakshina Kananda District Vokkaligara Sangha.

“We will not accept Karandlaje as the Vokkaliga face of BJP at any cost even if she is the last politician the community has. We know that she and Yeddyurappa are planning to usurp political power in the state,” he said.
