Various women’s college in the city have whipped up a protest against the atrocities on women by fringe groups in Mangalore.
“We feel unsafe here and what good was that societal system that cannot protect their women,” they questioned the government. The protest was joined by various colleges under the umbrella of the St Agnes College Mangalore.

“We have students from different women’s colleges arrived to protest the act of hooliganism in the name of socio-religious values,” said principal of the St Agnes college Prem D’Souza.

“The barbaric incident that took place on last Saturday in Morning Mist Home Stay at Padil, was an indication of the devaluation of social values that were going on in Mangalore. We condemn this brutal act and we decry the so called ‘custodians of culture’ and ‘keepers of modesty for women’ to dictate terms in this secular democratic setup,”  D’Souza added.

Students of St Agnes College also launched a signature campaign and collected over a thousand signatures which they plan to send to the governor.

The All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA) activists also descended on Mangalore. “Though we have arrived on the scene little later we had to collect so much material and muster support from our national level principals. Many of our leaders will be arriving in Mangalore and we are also planning to hold a demonstration in Mangalore in the same way we did after the attack on pubs” said state general secretary of AIDWA KS Lakshmi told DNA.
