A homemaker, Manjula, 38, was found dead in her house in Subbanna Garden in Vijayanagar on Tuesday.

Her attacker fled with the gold jewellery she was wearing. The police suspect the attacker is an acquaintance of the victim.
Deputy commissioner of police, SN Sidramappa, said the culprit killed Manjula by hitting her on the head with a blunt object. Her throat was also slit. He said the police have zeroed in on a suspect and collected his details. He said the culprit would soon be arrested.

Manjula was found dead at 3.30pm by her daughter MC Lakshmi, who was studying on the roof along with her friends and brother. Lakshmi came home for a glass of water. “I knocked on the door. When there was no response, I peeped through the keyhole and saw blood and opened the window beside the door. I saw my mother in a pool of blood,” said Lakshmi.

“My sister was crying and I came running down from the terrace. I did not know what to do and started crying too. Our neighbours rushed to the spot and broke the door,” said Madhu, Manjula’s son.

Natesh, Manjula’s relative, said her neighbours informed the police. Madhu called his grandparents in Mandya and they told Natesh to go to the house and take care of the children, he said.
The police said Manjula’s attacker locked the door and fled. The police said there is no evidence of forced entry and it suggests that Manjula had allowed her attacker to come inside the house.

“Manjula told her children not to come down until she called them as a friend was visiting. She sent them to the terrace to study,” said Sidramappa.

Lakshmi told police that her mother’s gold chain, earring and a cheque have been stolen. The police said there could be multiple motives—murder for gain or an extramarital affair—for such a murder. The body has been shifted to Victoria Hospital. A case of murder has been registered in Vijayanagar police station.
