A gang of six men waylaid four employees of a private firm and escaped with Rs32 lakh in HSR Layout on Tuesday. Police said the employees of Shiva Trading Company were taking the cash to be deposited in a bank when the alleged robbers intercepted their vehicle at Madivala police station limits at about 11.15 am.

The machete-wielding robbers had been tailing the employees’ Maruti Eeco in a car. One of them  broke the glass of the left rear window, and took away two bags containing the money.  One bag contained ¤20 lakh and the other contained ¤12 lakh. The staffers were on their way to Karnataka Bank branch near Silk Board when they were robbed.

The robbers also threw chilli powder on the employees’ faces, blinding them temporarily. The employees were identified as Lakshman, Shankara Reddy and Krishna Reddy, and driver Rajasekhara Reddy. Though the staffers were threatened with machetes, none of them were injured. Krishna Reddy was a relative of the firm’s proprietor, police said.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar said, “A separate team has been formed to arrest the gang. All check-posts have been alerted,” the officer said.

Witnesses said the robbers were travelling in a red Hyundai Getz, bearing a Maharashtra registration number. Investigators did not rule out the possibility of local elements using a fake number plate to mislead the probe.  A witness, who was heading towards Silk Board Junction, said he saw a red car speeding away towards Hosur.

“I thought the occupants of the car were under the influence of alcohol. Then I heard someone screaming for help. I thought the car was involved in a hit-and-run case. I rushed to the spot and learnt of the robbery,” he added.
