Angry about yet another water shortage? Blame it on the eagle’s nest that fell on electric lines and brace yourself to make do with less water for another two days.

It’s official: There will be shortage in water supply for two more days. Bangalore gets about 900 million litres of water every day from the Cauvery river.

However, water was not pumped for about an hour on Monday and thus the shortage.

Narayan, executive engineer with Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), said the nest that fell on 220Kv line was one-metre long and wet. As a result, there was a danger of earthing and thus the motors had to be turned off as a precautionary measure.

Prahlad Rao, BWSSB public relations officer, said as the motors were turned off, there would not be enough pressure to pump the water to the city.

Water is pumped to the houses in the city from 50 ground-level reservoirs. These reservoirs receive water from Harohalli, where the eagle’s nest fell on transmission lines, starting the domino effect that has left Bangaloreans high and dry.

Rao explained why the city’s water supply depended on pumping.
He said water has to travel 120 km to reach Bangalore and the motors are never turned off.

He said the motors could not be turned off as the water required pressure to travel the distance.

Meanwhile, people in Bangalore are not amused with the inconceivable reason for the water shortage.

“We are not surprised. It is not an unusual situation. Only this time, the BWSSB has found a new excuse,” said K Umeshwara, president of Koramangala Residents’ Forum.

KN Jagadish Kumar, president of Residents’ Welfare Association, Virupakshapura, said if such situations kept arising, it would be a big problem for the citizens to go on with life in this city.
