Demonstrating support for chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda, the Federation of Vokkaliga Sanghas has sent a strong message to the BJP state party president KS Eshwarappa and national president Nitin Gadkari, warning them against any tactics to remove Gowda from his post. The Federation held a series of meetings across Mysore, Chamarajanagar, Mandya and Ramanagaram.

The Old Mysore Vokkaliga Federation, based in Vidyaranyapuram, claims to have over 10 lakh members in three districts and affiliate branches across the state.

“We are against any single community being at the centre of power. Our internal democracy is in good shape, and we believe that democracy should prevail at all levels. Gowda had sacrificed his Lok Sabha seat to head the state at a difficult time, and he has delivered good governance,” said Basave Gowda, president, Old Mysore Vokkaliga Federation.

“We would not mind if Gowda was removed by the party central leadership on charges of non-performance or other shortcomings. But if Yeddyurappa wanted him removed based on opposition from some other community, that would not be acceptable,” added Basave Gowda.

A member of the Kodagu district Vokkaligara Nadavara Sangha, Kushalappa Gowda, said: “We have been silent for the past six months as Yeddyurappa and his clan were trying to play caste politics. But now, it’s crossed all limits.”

Protest
Mandya and Ramanagarm, which is the heartland of Vokkaliga population, are prepared to take to the streets if the BJP removes Gowda from his post.

Congress leader Ambareesh, lashed out against Yeddyurappa. “He cannot claim the chief minister’s seat on the merits of having support of people belonging to one community. He has forgotten that Karnataka is still a part of the Indian federation,” said Ambareesh.

In the coastal areas, the Bunts—distant cousins of Vokkaligas—have kept away from caste politics.  The Buntara Yaane Nadavara Sangha has not issued a statement. But within the Sangha, leaders are bracing up to close ranks and present a united face of Vokkaliga-Bunt community if Yeddyurappa continues with his malicious schemes.  “It is not right to project a certain person belonging to a certain caste as chief minister,” said Shankarlinge Gowda, Chamarajanagar MLA.
