The Visvesvaraya Industrial and  Technological Museum (VITM) is well on its way to make sure kids in the city are inspired towards research in science as the museum is likely to start an innovation centre as early as next year that will have students from the city conducting experiments.

“This particular proposal is still in the offing as the budget has to be approved but five cities including Bangalore are likely to get innovation centres which will consist of interactive experiments, an innovation gallery and an activity lab as well as innovation resource centre,” says Shivaprasad Khened, director VITM.

The innovation gallery according to Khened will introduce children to some of the most ground breaking discoveries that changed the course of the world. “Think about innovations like the Apple products and creators like Steve Jobs. This is basically to inspire children. But apart from big innovations, we will also showcase the kinds of innovation employed by local Indian artisans to create their works of art,” adds Khened.

However, the most ambitious project would be the set-up of a real time laboratory that will introduce students to various scientific experiments. “Basically hat is happening in the school system is that children are learning their lessons by rote and nothing else. Through this lab, they will be introduced to how a research and development lab works like. They will get to conduct simple experiments under the tutelage of the education officers present right here in VITM and will be able to understand the concepts,” offers Khened.   Some of the tentative experiments that students will be made to do will be testing the quality of soil or the contamination of water.

“We will have our own gadgets and the experiments will be small scale but they will have an opportunity to form hypothesis and be creative,” he says. However it might be a while before the laboratory becomes a reality in the city.

“We will have to carve out a space for the lab within the museum itself and there isn’t much space to begin with. We also are planning to get faculty from Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and other research labs in the city to come and talk to the students and mentor them. Hopefully it all gets ready by next financial year,” he adds.
