Unable to fund his college-going children’s education, a disabled electrician committed suicide in his house in Adarshnagar on Monday night, police said on Tuesday.

The man, Kandaswamy, had survived electrocution two years ago, but one of his legs had been paralyzed in that accident.  Since then, his wife, employed in a garment manufacturing unit, had been the family’s sole breadwinner.

Police said Kandaswamy had supported himself against a wall to climb on a chair and tie his wife’s saree to a hook on the roof to hang himself. He committed suicide when his wife Mallika, 35, and children Soumya, 19 and Harindra, 17, were away from home.

The incident came to light when they returned  around 7.30 pm.
The children were students in a private college, police said. The body was handed over to his family after a post-mortem in Victoria Hospital. The Chandra Layout police have registered a case.
