Sode Mutt authorities have stuck to their stance of keeping away the swamiji of Puttige Mutt, Sugunendra Swamiji, from participating in the biennial Paryaya festival to be solemnised on
January 18.

Mutt authorities told DNA that a panel of experts has concluded that the swamiji cannot be invited to participate in the durbar as well as the ceremonial procession on Paryaya day, but he can be invited on any other occasion to various programmes of the mutt in due course.

Another source said the name of Puttige swamiji had been omitted due to oversight.

“Ashtamutts are the base of Dvaita philosophy. Madhvacharya must have chosen the number eight to equalise the forces in the manner we do in a modern democracy. If the Sode Mutt authorities do not want Sugunendra Thirtha swamiji to attend the Paryaya celebrations and if the other mutt heads do not intervene, they will be directly or indirectly responsible for abetting the downfall of a great tradition and reducing the number of mutts from eight to seven,” said  Esha Vittala Dasa Swamiji of Kemar Mutt in Moodbidri.

“They should follow the rules laid down by Madhvacharya. The scriptures do not state that a swamiji should not undertake the foreign trip,” he added.

World Madhva Association experts have opined that Sugunendra Thirtha had established Dvaita philosophy in the US, Europe, and Russia through extensive touring.  “It is because of his efforts that Madhvacharya’s teachings have reached many countries.

“The Madhvatatwasara also prescribes to the swamijis to spread the teaching of Madhvacharya far and wide when the swamijis were not confined to their mutts and Krishna temple during the two-year Paryaya period,” said Bhaskar Acharya, an expert on Mahanmadhvaradhanta, a scripture of Madhva philosophy.

Lord Rama, in order to establish Dharma, had crossed the sea to go to Sri Lanka;  Lord Hanumantha, too, crossed the sea for a cause.  Even in modern times, when swamijis take a flight to Mumbai from Mangalore, they cross the Arabian Sea, argues Prasannacharya, a scholar of Puttige Mutt.

Udupi MLA and state minister for higher education, Dr VS Acharya, has told the Sode Mutt authorities to invite Sugunendra Thirta swamiji and reprint the invitations of Paryaya with the swamiji’s name.

Acharya said: “I have played my part in resolving the situation amicably. Now, it is left to the wisdom of the Sode Mutt authorities.”

Senior scholar Bannaje Govindacharya and Brahmin social leaders Harikrishna Punaroor have also urged the mutt authorities to rescind their decision.
