Most heritage sites are either in a dilapidated state or mismanaged, but this particular monument we are talking about is alive and kicking. It’s managed well, but our own people do not visit this place.

On the other hand, students fly down all the way from China, Japan, Hong Kong and the US to study the structure.

The monument in question is the Hazrath Hameed Shah Khadri and Hazrath Muhib Shah Khadri Dargha (HHS & HMS complex) located in the heart of the city. The four acre heritage site in Cubbonpet near Halasurgate police station in the centre of the city is significant since it is located where the Third Mysore War was fought.

The complex is home to the tombs of Sufi saints Hazrat Hameed Shah and Hazrath Muhib Shah, who valiantly fought alien powers (the British), and attained martyrdom in defending the motherland. One of them, Muhib, was beheaded. The head fell in the premises of the closeby Dharmaraya Temple. The priests retained the head, and the headless body was buried at the spot.

Since a headless body was buried, the dargah was kept shelter-less. The two Sufi saints were close to Tipu Sultan, and advised him on religious and other matters.

Syed Ghouse Mohiyuddin, a retired KAS officer and officer on special duty, says that a group of foreign tourists and students visit the complex twice a year.

“Foreign students, especially those from the United States, come here in large numbers. They evince keen interest in studying and doing research about the site. They are thrilled about the historical significance that the site embodies. It is sad that no one from our own city or country visits this place,” Mohiyuddin maintains.

The site is managed by an 11-member committee formed by the Karnataka State Board of Wakfs. It manages several education institutions and involved in philanthropic activities.

When asked about the negligence by locals, Fayaz Quraishy, secretary of the complex, believes that once people know about the importance of the site, they would definitely pour in.

Only if such people were to be reading this.
