Taking a cue from the Akshardhan temple complex on the banks of the Yamuna in Delhi, inaugurated in 2005, and the initiative launched in 2008 by the government of Haryana to build a theme park in Kurukshetra, the site where Krishna gave the message of Karna to Arjuna, the state government too has set itself the task of creating a theme park at Hampi that will depict the glory of the Vijaynagar Empire and firmly establish the site as a tourist destination.
Minister for law, parliamentary affairs and urban development, S Suresh Kumar, made the announcement as he was inaugurating the website that the state government has launched with regard to the celebration of the 500th anniversary of the coronation of Sri Krishnadevaraya, who ruled the Vijaynagar Empire at the peak of its power. Preparations for the celebration of the event, from January 27-29 at Hampi, are on in full swing.

The state government also hopes to release a commemorative stamp and coin on the occasion of the celebrations of the 500th anniversary of the coronation — these, however, are still to be approved by the Central departments of philately and finance.
