With little scrutiny of baggage for train passengers, gangs from Odisha are finding it safer to use the Indian Railways to smuggle ganja (cannabis) into Bangalore.

This has forced the police to work overtime as most of the ganja supplied to the city come from Odisha and the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh. On Monday, the central crime branch police arrested two Odisha natives for ganja peddling in the city. The duo brought the ganja from Odisha in a train and with the help of a friend was supplying the banned substance in the city.

Last year, three people who brought ganja from Odisha were nabbed by the CCB upon their arrival at Yelahanka.

The police said the ganja smugglers from Odisha stuff ganja in their baggage and while travelling keep the consignment in an adjacent compartment to avoid getting caught. While the smugglers keep an eye on the baggage, they do not come forward to claim it when it is seized by the police. In case the ganja is seized, they get down at the next station and return to their native place. Otherwise, the consignment reaches its destination.

These smugglers supply ganja to roadside vendors in KR Market, JJ Nagar, Hosaguddadahalli, Cottonpet and other areas, said the police.

The CCB police said that ganja also reaches Bangalore from various places of Andhra Pradesh, especially the districts of Khammam and Warangal. The peddlers from Andhra Pradesh, however, use bus to ferry their consignment. They are helped by locals of Kolar and Hosakote to ensure the ganja reaches Bangalore, said the police.

Inside Karnataka, ganja comes to the city from places like Shimoga, Madikeri, Hunasoor, Chamarajanagar and Ramanagar.
