The fun starts here,” the posters proclaim. Internationally renowned beat-box sensations The Boxettes are coming to your city in an event organised by Tuborg. Beatboxing is a fairly new concept in India and Tuborg hopes to introduce this art to the Indian audience the ‘fun-starter’ way.

This new, exciting, edgy and unique band from London claims to be the female version of Bauchklang (an Austrian beat-boxing band). The Boxettes are a unique and extremely talented band, made up of five women who hope to beatbox their way into Bangalorean’s hearts.

The Boxettes have perfected the art of beatboxing, which is a form of vocal percussion that primarily involves the art of producing drum beats, rhythm, and musical sounds using one’s mouth, lips, tongue and voice. “Beatboxing is a true passion for all of us and we all work really hard,” says Bellatrix, who is currently a female world champion in beatboxing and has been teaching the other members of the band to beatbox.

Beatboxing today is connected with hip-hop culture, although it is not limited to hip-hop music alone. Beatboxing’s current popularity is due in part to hip-hop artists such as Rahzel, Kenny Muhammad, and Matisyahu, who have promoted the art form across the world. They are all huge influences for the Boxettes. “Hip-hop is a major influence. We recently did a gig with a British group called ‘Stig and Syntax’ who are amazing!” says Bellatrix.
Beatboxing is said to have originated from various ethnic traditions such as that of bol (a type of vocal performing art thought to have originated in India several thousand years ago) to some African traditions that use performers’ bodies (clapping, stomping) to make musical sounds to maintain a steady musical pace. The African methods also involved making sounds using their mouths by loudly breathing in and out, which is incorporated into beatboxing today.

“We search for music all the time to inspire us, including music from India,” say ‘the boxettes’. They add that they are also currently working on some world instruments and Bellatrix also uses a tabla in the set.

These five extraordinary young women expand the realms of vocal possibility, blending exceptional harmonies with extraordinary sounds and ground-shaking beats. A concoction of masterful song writing, enthralling stage presence and awe-inspiring sounds from these five musical personalities make them the most diverse and eclectic female group out there. With the concept of beatboxing still young at India, Bellatrix says “We hope that India will welcome us with open arms and enjoy the versatility in our set along with our energy!”
