At the BBMP council meeting on Wednesday, corporators expressed their displeasure over frequent water woes in the city. The chairman of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), Gaurav Gupta, too was present at the meeting.

The corporators asked BWSSB to provide drinking water and sewage connection immediately as people in their wards are facing hardships because of this.

Kodigehalli ward corporator Ashwath Narayan said that 90% of the phone calls he receive are from angry residents who complain about water supply. “I am tired of answering the calls, as these residents use abusive language when they don’t get satisfactory answers,” he said.

Basavanapura corporator Poornima said that every time she sought information from the BWSSB zonal officers, they give her false information. There are many bore wells in the city, but not many are in working condition, she said.

DJ Halli ward corporator Sampat Raj said that valve men mafia in the city is on the rise.  JD(S) Kaveripura corporator Satish demanded toilet papers, if not water.

“It’s alright if you delay road construction work. But water is something that we require immediately,” he said.
BWSSB chief, Gupta, said that 27 special officers have been appointed in all sub-divisions. The public can file their complaints with them.

Use borewells
Gupta said that there is a demand for Cauvery water in the city. The high voltage and feeder interruption has even resulted in pumping of water. “It is impossible to provide drinking water to 110 villages. The CMC areas must make use of borewells,” he said. He added that the Cauvery 4th phase 2nd stage will be complete in four months and this will resolve water woes to an extent.

“The BWSSB has hired 178 private tankers, while it owns 42 tankers. “We have discussed the matter with BWSSB minister Suresh Kumar. Talks are on to purchase electricity. By June, 40 jetting machines will be purchased,” he said.

Gupta said that the assistant engineers have been assigned the responsibility of repairing the borewells in their respective zones.
BBMP commissioner MK Shankarlinge Gowda said that both agencies are preparing an action plan to solve water crisis.

The BBMP has released `7.5 crore to purchase additional 30 water tankers. Of this, `25 lakh has been allotted for 110 villages. Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda has promised `50 crore to the BWSSB.
