Sindagi, which has survived a shock and saved itself from a possible communal flare-up earlier this week, seems to have gone into introspection. The town elders now started looking at things in a different perspective after the police arrested Hindu fringe group activists for hoisting the Pakistani flag on the administrative headquarters of Sindagi taluk last Sunday.  The alleged culprits have been arrested.

Rajanna D Naryankar, a council member of Sindagi Town Municipal Council, said: “How can our own people hoist the flag of an alien country? We should now start introspecting as to what drove these youngsters to play such a dangerous prank.”

“We have done our job honestly without any fear or favour and the result is there for everyone to see. But the meticulous planning and scientific investigation could not have reached this decisive stage. My deputy superintendent Muthuraj and his men have done an excellent job,” Bijapur district superintendent of police DC Rajappa told DNA.

The culprits have been charged with sections 124 (A) and 153 (A) for sedition and inciting communal disturbance, respectively.

Since 2001, there have been three incidents that could have turned into communal flare-ups, including the current one.

A Hindu temple and a statue of Vivekananda were desecrated earlier. This is the second incident of hoisting the Pakistani flag in Bijapur district.

In 2008, too, some miscreants had hoisted a Pakistan flag in Tipu Sultan Circle. The alleged culprits are still at large. On the other hand, activists of Sri Rama Sene (SRS) have disowned the youth who were arrested. But according to sources in SRS, the six persons who were arrested were indeed from SRS and one of them even had a letter of commendation from SRS chief Pramod Muthalik.

“We do not approve of what they did,” said Arun Mandlikar, an SRS activist.

All these activists were earlier in Shiv Sena and, when Pramod Muthalik severed his ties with them, they joined the SRS, which Muthalik had started in Karnataka. Muthalik had earlier severed his ties with Bajrang Dal in 1999.
