lass 12 Indian School Certificate (ISC) board exams conducted by Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) started on Monday with Physics (practicals) paper.

Nearly 700  students are taking the board exams this year in the city. Karnataka has nearly 18 ISC schools affiliated to the CISCE board. “Everything went smoothly. The first exam was conducted across all centres on Monday. There were no issues reported from the students or the schools,” said Princess Franklyn, the convenor in-charge for the ISC exams in the city and principal of Bishop Cotton Girls’ School (BCGS).

According to the convenor, about 150 students attempted the Physics practical exam at the Bishop Cotton’s. “The exam was not too difficult. I was feeling slightly nervous because it is the first board exam, but it went fine,” said Greeshma S, ISC student.

The next exam is Chemistry practicals, which is slated for February 17. The theory exams will start on March 3 with English paper 1 and conclude on April 8 with Physical Education (theory) paper.
With a slew of exams starting this month and running into March, the students are bound to face certain amount of stress. While the ISC board exams have already started, the ICSE 10th board exams will begin on March 3. The CBSE 10th and 12th board exams too will be held from March 3 and the second PUC exams from March 18.

Only the CBSE and PU boards are setting up helplines to deal with stress and anxiety among students and parents. According to health experts, helplines are crucial because these act as crises intervention centres or SOS centres.

“Counselling should be a year-round activity at schools. But having a helpline during exams is a good initiative because it can deal with emergency situations arising before, during and after the exams,” said Dr Ali Khwaja, student counsellor, Banjara Academy. Dr Vikram Prabhu, psychologist, said, “If the child has a history of reacting with anxiety during exams, it should  be ensured that he/she gets adequate help at an early stage.”   t
