Six Bangalore students held for betting on World Cup

Six students, who allegedly decided to cash in on the ongoing cricket World Cup fever by running a betting racket, were arrested from a Rajyotsavanagar house, police said on Thursday.

A television set, laptop, seven mobile phones and Rs1,800 in cash were seized from the arrested persons, Gourav Ray, 22, Sanjeev Ranjan, 23, and Manav, 21, all three residents of Rajyotsavanagar in KS Layout second stage, Amrindar Singh, 25, of 30th Main in KS Layout, Sumanth, 23, and Avisingh, 25 , both residents of JP Nagar.

The police said they were pursuing courses in engineering and management. The students were allegedly taking bets on the Pakistan-Kenya tie when the police raided the house on Wednesday night.

The police said the students were charged under Section 78 (VI) of the Karnataka Police Act for running a betting syndicate.

Meanwhile, city police commissioner, Shankar M Bidari, has ordered his men to crackdown on betting syndicates in Bangalore. The police have formed two teams to prevent illegal betting.

Bidari said betting was likely to increase in the backdrop of the World Cup.
