UV Singh, the brave yet shy chief conservator of forests with Lake Development Authority and special officer with Lok ayukta looking into the illegal mining, tells DNA that attacks like the one that took place on Sunday will not affect him and there is no need for security as it will hamper his working.

Lok ayukta is planning to provide you security. How do you view this?
I am not scared of anyone. I don’t need security as it will restrict my movement and my way of working and solving cases.

What have you to say on the investigation into Sunday’s assault?
Lok ayukta justice N Santosh Hegde is looking into it and I feel relaxed. But my focus is on other cases in the Lok ayukta.

As lakes are being polluted, what is your next step?
There are some industries in and around the city which are polluting lakes. I’ve requested the KSPCB to look into the matter After completing mining reports, we will focus on clearing encroachments and sewerage waste.

Is this the first time you have faced such an incident?
This has been the fourth such incident since 1987 when I started working in Karnataka. But this has never deterred me from acting tough with people indulging in illegal acts.

The first case was in 1989 in Doddaballapur when my team members were beaten up while trying to stop over 150 trucks carrying eucalyptus trees illegally. The second incident was in 2007 when we raided illegal mines in Bellary. Here a JCB crushed the car we were travelling in from behind. Luckily, we escaped. The third incident was in 2008 in Sandoor during another raid on illegal mines.
