The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) found a second cannon at the Metro site near Vani Vilas Hospital on Friday morning. This is the second cannon to be unearthed by Metro workers at the site. It was found approximately 10 metres away from the first cannon.
The unexpected finding of the second cannon at the Metro site has surprised the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) as well as BMRCL. The ASI has now decided that its experts will inspect the area as well as the cannons, and decide the next course of action.
The second cannon is identical to the first, according to ASI officials who inspected it on Friday. Both cannons are presently at the Metro construction site itself and the officials are yet to take a decision on shifting them.
According to KR Ramakrishna, commissioner, ASI, “Experts from ASI inspected the area on Thursday and Friday. So far they have not found anything that suggests there are more such cannons buried underneath. However, experts from the Museum department as well as ASI officials will visit the area and then we will decide what the future course of action is,” he said.
TM Keshava, assistant superintending archaeologist said that since it was a fortified area, the likelihood of finding something of historical value could not have been eliminated. However, ASI had not expected to find another cannon so close to the first one.
The cannons are likely to be shifted to museum in the city, Ramakrishna said, although initial discussions revolved around shifting it to Tipu Sultan’s Summer Palace. Tipu Sultan’s palace has presently been ruled out considering the cannons were found buried and according to the Treasure Trove Act, it belongs to the state government.
The BMRCL, for now, will continue digging the area. According to BMRCL spokesperson, BLY Chavan, “We will continue with the work. How can we discover more cannons if we stop digging,” joked Chavan, adding, “As of now, they have not asked us to stop work and we will continue.”
