Here's a ray of hope for the beleaguered steel units in the state. Chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday announced that the state government is contemplating on moving the Supreme Court to ensure the supply of iron ore which has been severely hit after imposition of mining ban in the state.

The state has been facing several problems due to the blanket ban on iron ore mining imposed in the state on the directives of the Supreme Court, following the findings of the Central Empowered Committee and the CBI investigations into illegal mining.

"We are losing about Rs4,000 crore annually due to the ban. More than 1.5 lakh people have lost their jobs. However, it is a sensitive issue and several factors are involved, so we are consulting legal luminaries to come to the rescue of our steel plants," Gowda said during an interaction with members from Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) on Tuesday.

The problems involve illegal mining and environmental concerns. The state government will have to present a plan of action to reverse the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining.

“The ban has dealt a big blow to the steel plants which are finding it difficult to get the raw material. The state is even losing out on investors as the ban is keeping them away from Karnataka. We are contemplating filing an affidavit explaining all these problems before the Supreme Court in a month or two to ensure that steel plants are not deprived of iron ore,” Gowda assured. The CM hoped that the apex court would come to the state’s rescue. “The Supreme Court also understands the problem,” he said.

The chief minister has promised all help to redress the grievances of steel factories in the state.
