In an unexpected development on Sunday, Karnataka governor HR Bhardwaj cut short chief minister BS Yeddyurappa’s joy over winning back the rebel MLAs by sending a confidential report to the Centre recommending imposition of president’s rule in the state.

In the report, dispatched to Delhi through his special officer, Bhardwaj reportedly draws President’s attention to how the sanctity of the floor tests had been allegedly subverted by the Yeddyurappa government by misusing the office of the Speaker. Citing the Supreme Court order which made strong observations against the conduct of the chief minister and speaker KG Bopaiah, the report is said to have recommended president’s rule in “the best interest of the state”.

“It is not just about mustering numbers, the government has to abide by the Constitution. I will not let anyone play smart with me,” Bhardwaj said highlighting the various land scams, cases of nepotism and financial irregularities in the recent past to justify his recommendation.

Chief minister Yeddyurappa, too, acted swiftly and shot off letters to president Pratibha Patil, prime minister Manmohan Singh and Union home minister P Chidambaram, urging them not to act on the Governor’s report. Yeddyurappa has accused Bhardwaj of colluding with the Opposition to destabilise his government. Citing the letters of support submitted by 10 rebel MLAs expressing their support to his leadership, Yeddyurappa has threatened the Centre of serious consequences if president’s rule is imposed by ignoring the people’s mandate for the government which now enjoys the support of 120 MLAs in the 224 member assembly.

Yeddyurappa has convened a cabinet meeting and BJP legislature party meeting on Monday to chalk out a future course of action. The BJP also decided to take all its legislators to Delhi and parade them before the president on Monday.  Party president KS Eshwarappa demanded the Centre to recall the governor.
