He may have evolved into a giant by essaying a multitude of roles in front of the camera. But the late Kannada thespian, Dr Rajkumar, never missed a chance to get behind the camera.

Lensman Bhavani N Lakshminarayan, who is exhibiting his collection of rare and unseeen photographs of the Kannada legend at the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath, recalled how the actor was passionate about photography.

“Many a time he used to take my camera and take photographs at the shooting spot. He used to ask me about the camera’s various intricacies like the focal length, aperture, etc. But that was Dr Raj... curious about the tiniest of details of whatever subject he came across,” Bhavani said.

Bhavani’s exhibition, which was inaugurated on Friday, will end on Sunday, the actor’s 83rd birth anniversary. Out of 400 photographs, only  a hundred have been displayed due to space constraints.

Several photographs show Raj at various shooting locations. In one of them, the actor is seen in a pensive mood with actress Harini. In another, a beaming Raj is seen holding actress Bharati. Most photographs in the exhibition are coming into the public domain for the first time. There are some rare ones showing the thespian with his contemporaries like Kalyankumar and Udaykumar, and Kalpana.

Raj’s youngest son and Sandalwood hero Puneet Rajkumar, who inaugurated the photo exhibition, was nostalgic. “These photographs take me back to my childhood. I used to accompany Appaji to shooting spots. Off screen, he never behaved like a hero. He used to eat with everyone on the location and mingle with them like a commoner,” Puneet said.

Entry to the exhibition is free for all and it is open from 7 am to 6 pm. For details, call the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath on 080 22263424.
