Chaos ruled the state Assembly on Thursday, too. Legislative business came to a grinding halt as expected as Opposition leaders refused to allow the question-and-answer session in the wake of the porn scandal. Taking this as an excuse, Speaker DH Shankara Murthy adjourned the House for an indefinite period.

Amid ruckus, chief minister DV Sadananda Gowda replied to the debate on motion of thanks to the governor’s address. However, the CM had to abandon his reply as pandemonium prevailed in the House and he circulated the copies of his reply. Later, the House was adjourned sine die.

As it happened
As soon as the session began, council Opposition leader Motamma, JD(S) leader MC Nanaiah and others occupied the well of the House and demanded a discussion on the porngate scandal in the Assembly.

However, the Speaker rejected their demand, saying that he would take a call on that after the question- and-answer session. But the Opposition leaders did not relent and continued to raise slogans against the ruling BJP government. The House was adjourned for half an hour.

When the session resumed, the Opposition once again raised their demand for a debate.

Minister for primary and secondary education Vishweshwara Hegde Kageri said it was impossible to allow such a discussion in the council. Gowda explained that he had given enough clarification about the issue on Wednesday, though it was not necessary. “It’s not fair on the part of the Opposition to gain mileage out of this issue. I doubt the intention of the Opposition,” he stated.

In his reply to the debate on the motion of thanks to the governor’s address, the chief minister claimed that the proceedings in both the Houses went peacefully and meaningfully. “There were serious debates on various issues and I congratulate the Opposition and ruling parties’ members for this,” he stated.

He claimed that there was about 20 per cent shortage of electricity in the state. “It is planned to generate 5,000 mega watt of electricity every day in the state. The state government had released `5,028 crore for the Metro rail project. By 2013, all works in connection with Metro Phase One will be completed.”

He further added that the Global Investors Meet has been planned in the state for the second time in June.
