Following raids in Bidar to apprehend criminals of Iranian descent, the police are set to raid houses of criminals in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The gangs have gained notoriety for their attention-diversion tactics to rob jewellery from women.

“We raided houses in Bidar last month and nabbed more than 40 miscreants. As a result, we have solved many cases,” said additional commissioner of police (law and order), T Suneel Kumar.

Gangs in neighbouring states have struck at homes by promising to polish gold jewellery and fleeing with the valuables. Members of one gang pose as businessmen and target shops owned by elderly women. They usually request the victims to bless them for beginning a new business and flee with their valuables.

The gangs are also involved in cheating. “Some people come to the city, rent a commercial space and put up boards that motorcycle, electronic goods and other items are sold at half price,” said Kumar. Another gang from Tamil Nadu usually runs the shop for a week and collect advance payments for orders. Then, they flee, he added.

Miscreants of Iranian descent have been operating in the city for more than four years. Many of them hail from Gulbarga, Bidar, Belgaum, Anantapur, Bidar and Goa and speak Hindi and Kannada. They have so far targeted middle-aged women.

Besides in Bangalore, the gang was active in Hassan, Shimoga, Hubli, Belgaum, Tumkur and Mysore. Once they enter the city, they split into groups and commit 10-15 offences and leave the city for a few days.

Modus operandi
Gangsters pose as policemen and advise women to take off jewellery, saying robbers are on the prowl in the neighbourhood.

They even have fake police ID cards. “It is tough to identify gang members and they do not reveal information during interrogation,” said a senior police officer.
