The third day of PhD counselling by Bangalore University had research guides and candidates protesting over various issues.

Even the top performers were disappointed with the counselling session, which is being held at Central College until March 9.

A seventh-rank candidate, who was keen to opt for HR and marketing, was told that none of the guides are interested in the subject. Later, when she was asked to choose a guide, each of them turned away. The guides said they were already assisting the maximum number of candidates. “The guides know whom they want to take and whom they don’t want,” said a student.

Some candidates said UGC guidelines permit one teacher to guide six candidates. However, while teachers at BU are being given six candidates, those from affiliated colleges are able to guide only one candidate. “Even in colleges that have been recognised as research centres, there is a disparity in the number of candidates,” said Dr SK Nashi, research guide from KLE College. He added that those with years of experience are being given only one candidate.

Ramachandra Gowda, dean, department of commerce and management, said: “There are 15 seats and 40 to 50 candidates could get a seat.” There is no question of re-counselling, he added.

BU vice-chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev said he would not comment on the issue.

This year, candidates interested in pursuing a PhD degree from Bangalore University had to write an entrance test, following which the university prepared a merit list.

Those candidates who cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) were not required to take the PhD entrance test and could register directly.
